Loving yourself while going through hard times such as chemotherapy

SELF is more than just a product. It’s a true lifestyle, it reflects taking care of yourself. We want to encourage all women (and men) around the world to take some extra time for themselves. We strongly believe that the more you take care of yourself, the happier you’ll be. Unfortunately there are people that have to face hardship every day, such as getting the horrible news that you have cancer and have to endure chemotherapy. We all know people that have to go through that, it’s a difficult subject to talk about. At SELF we want to show our support to everyone going through these hard times. That’s why I’ll be giving some more information on how to treat your skin while going through chemotherapy and how to take some extra time for the simple things. Because taking care of yourself is simply that important.

Changes to your skin

Receiving terrible news can be a big blow, not only psychologically but of course physically as well. In hard times as these many people think it’s unnecessary to wear make-up or to look good when leaving the house. But everybody likes to make an effort and look good. If you find yourself attractive you’ll feel better! That’s why it’s important to take some moments for yourself and why some extra skin care can be very helpful.

Chemotherapy has a heavy impact on the skin. This is because it affects certain fast-growing cells, but some healthy cells can grow and divide faster as well. The cytostatica in chemo won’t only affect the bad cells, but the healthy cells will suffer as well. Some affected cells are hair cells, blood cells and the mucous membrane.

During chemotherapy patients often have to deal with a greyish tint, loss of eyebrows and hairs and fatigued look. The skin can feel taut, itchy and peeling or flaky skin can occur. It can often go unnoticed at first, but the skin of patients can inflame quickly, which causes pigmentation. Which is why it’s very important to take care of your skin before, during and after chemotherapy.

Prepare your skin

The skin has an important function, to form the protective layer between the body and the environment. Chemo affects the skin, so it’s important to prepare yourself for the effects of the treatment. This can be done by maintaining the strength of the outer layer and hydrating it with adjusted products. Avoid chemical products, but use those based on all the goods Mother Nature has to offer.

SELF came into life because I was looking for a solution to my daughter’s skin problem. Our products exist out of 100% natural ingredients, all of which were chosen for their beneficial and proven effects. These products are suitable for any skin type and we would like to encourage everyone that has to endure hard times to take care of themselves. That’s why I’ll be giving some extra information on proper skin care before, during and after chemo. To prepare your skin for the treatment you’ll have to hydrate your skin as best you can. Rub your skin daily with a feeding body butter and day cream, and don’t forget your lips!

During chemotherapy

Besides preparing for a treatment, it’s important to know how to support your skin after the treatment. With the following tips we’ll make sure your skin stays hydrated:

  1. Avoid long and hot baths, as this dries out the skin. Use a body butter and day cream on your body and face afterwards. At SELF we have products that feed of your skin as well as your face through natural ingredients. Don’t forget about your lips as these can feel dry and chapped as well. Our Soft Luxurious Lip balm is 100% natural, feeds your lips and make them feel comfortable and silky soft.

  2. Make sure you clean your skin on a daily basis. This way you’ll cut back the chances of impurities getting in your pores and clogging them up. Go for products that don’t contain soap, as this will dry out your skin and make it feel irritated. To remove dead cells your best option is to use a scrub. As opposed to other scrubs on the market, our scrub is based on a mild formula which means it’s suitable for sensitive skin. After cleaning your skin don’t rub it dry but use a dabbing motion to avoid further irritations.

  3. Avoid the sun and be sure to use sunscreen and lip balm with a high factor.

  4. Drink lots of water. Our bodies consist of 60% water and a hydrated skin needs plenty of fluids.

  5. Avoid perfumes or deodorants that contain alcohol, as this causes a dry skin.

Plan moments for yourSELF

If you’re feeling ill then looking good won’t be your top priority. But yet we see that the proper care and attention for your appearance influences your self-esteem and give you that much needed boost to get through the day. Are you going through treatment at the moment or have you just finished? Be sure to take a few moments for yourself and plan a spoil-yourself-day! If you’re wondering what this means and how to do it, here are a few examples of what you could do!

A relaxing massage

One of the best ways to relax is a massage, it can work wonders. A massage can be a healthy distraction and you can escape your daily troubles. Yet you can’t just visit any random masseur. On http://zorgmassage.be you can find all kinds of masseurs who are experts in the field of care and know exactly what a patient needs. They know which products they can use and which are better to avoid, and how to deal with the issues presented by various patients.

Mindfulness

You will probably have heard of mindfulness. It’s an attention-focused training in which you’ll be fully present ‘in the moment’. Research has shown that mindfulness has positive effects with patients suffering from cancer. This way it can be beneficial to your subconscious to deal with stress and place you into the here and now. Nathalie Cardinaels is a clinical psychologist and specialized in mindfulness with cancer-patients. She can provide you with an 8 week training to help you to live in the moment and become your former self again. You can find more information on http://www.mildenmindful.be/

Try to get some exercise

Exercise is good for you, I won’t have to tell you that. A daily 10 minute walk in the fresh outside air can work miracles. Swimming can be a relaxing activity, it helps your body get flexible and isn’t too strenuous on your body.

SELF is more than just a product, it’s taking time for yourself. We would like to encourage everyone to take more time for yourSELF. As we notice many of you have questions regarding skin care and how to treat yourself during chemotherapy and cancer, we’ll be giving workshops at hospitals now. So when you’re taking a coffee break, I can teach you all about skin care during chemotherapy.
