De ultieme aftersun tips: kalmeer je huid na een dag in de zon

Help, burned! What to do with sunburned skin?

We probably don’t have to tell you that applying sunscreen is important. But still — sometimes it happens faster than you think. An afternoon on the terrace, a walk on a crisp, sunny day or just lying on the beach a little too long. Before you know it, your skin is red, tight and sensitive: in other words, sunburned.

At Self, we’re big proponents of sunscreen as a daily skincare step . Because prevention (as always) is better than cure. But if things do go wrong, we’ve got a gentle, effective SOS plan for you.

First things first: how to protect your skin from sunburn

Applying sunscreen is one thing, but how and when you apply it is equally important. A few golden rules:

TIP 1, apply liberally | Most people apply too sparingly. You really need a generous amount for adequate protection.

TIP 2: Reapply every two hours | And especially after swimming, sweating, or drying off with a towel.

TIP 3: Seek shade between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. | During these hours, UV radiation is strongest and the risk of sunburn is highest.

TIP 4: Don't forget sensitive areas | Like your ears, the edge of your hairline, your feet, and your lips.

SOS: You've been burned. What now?

Your skin is a powerful organ that, with the right care, can recover well. It's important to support it with products that soothe, hydrate, and nourish it— without putting extra stress on it .

Your skin needs rest, recovery, and above all: softness. No harsh products, no perfume, no alcohol. Choose restorative, nourishing formulas that help soothe and restore your skin.

Our Self-Healing Ritual for Sunburn:

1. In the morning: the hydrating serum for your face

In the morning, it's important to rehydrate your skin. Our Hydrating Serum contains powerful ingredients that restore moisture balance and soothe your skin. The serum absorbs quickly, so you can easily follow up with your day cream or—of course—sunscreen.

2. Morning & evening: care for your body

Sunburned body? Choose rich, nourishing care. Our Deep Nourishing Body Butter soothes, deeply nourishes, and helps restore the skin barrier. Apply to clean skin and let your skin do the rest.

3. In the evening: the calming face mask

After a day in the sun, your face benefits from deep hydration. Our Intense Hydrating Facial Mask is rich in natural ingredients that soothe redness and replenish moisture. Leave it on for fifteen minutes (or use it as an overnight mask) and give your skin time to recover.

And after that?

Give your skin enough time to recover. Avoid further sun exposure and continue to apply sunscreen, even if your skin is already tanning. Remember: sun damage is cumulative and invisible—but every day of protection is a win.
