Sunscreen isn’t just for those lounging by the pool or going on vacation. It’s an essential step in your daily skincare routine — whether you’re heading outside, driving, or working at your desk next to a window. However, we’ve noticed that there are still a lot of questions surrounding the use of sunscreen. In this blog, we’ll answer the six most frequently asked questions.
Sunscreen: the 6 most frequently asked questions
1 | How often should you apply sunscreen?
The golden rule? Reapply every two hours. Even the best sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time, especially if you sweat, swim, or towel dry. So apply a generous layer in the morning and reapply regularly throughout the day for optimal protection.
2 | Does a water-resistant sunscreen provide longer protection?
Water-resistant doesn't mean you can swim for hours without worrying about reapplying. It does mean that the sunscreen stays on better while swimming or sweating, but even then, it's important to reapply after contact with water. Think of water-resistant as an added layer of protection, not a guarantee.
3 | What is the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreens?
Chemical filters penetrate the skin and absorb UV rays, while mineral filters (such as zinc oxide) remain on the surface of the skin and reflect sunlight. At Self, we consciously choose Non-Nano Zinc Oxide: a mineral filter that is gentle on the skin, offers broad-spectrum protection (against UVA and UVB), and is environmentally safe.
4 | How long can you keep a tube of sunscreen?
Our sunscreen is good for 6 months after opening. After that, the active filters may lose their effectiveness, meaning your skin is no longer sufficiently protected. Also, don't store your sunscreen in direct sunlight or extreme heat, as this can also affect its effectiveness.
5 | What exactly do UVA and UVB mean?
Both types of UV rays are harmful to your skin, but they work differently. Look for a sunscreen that protects against both!
— UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and cause skin aging ( A for aging ).
— UVB rays focus more on the skin surface and cause sunburn ( B for burning ).
6 | Are you better protected from the sun if you already have a tan?
Tanned skin offers a little extra protection, but it's far from enough. A natural tan is equivalent to about SPF 4. For comparison, Self's sunscreen has SPF 30. Even with a tan, applying sunscreen daily is essential to keep your skin healthy and beautiful.
Finally:
Sun protection is a long-term investment in your skin. And the best way to do that? Choose a sunscreen you enjoy using, that feels good on your skin, and that you're happy to apply daily. Like our Sunscreen SPF 30: soft, lightweight, and suitable for even the most sensitive skin.
Keep applying sunscreen, even when the sun isn't shining. Your skin will thank you. 💛
