SENSITIVE SKIN AFTER CHEMO
Characteristics of the skin during or after chemo
- The skin feels extremely dry and sensitive.
- You suffer from wounds and irritation.
- Your skin shows flakes.
- The skin is more sensitive to sunlight.
OUR ADVICE
Protect your skin from the sun
The skin often becomes more sensitive to sunlight during treatment. Use sunscreen daily to protect your skin.
Drink water
Our body is made up of 60% water. Healthy, hydrated skin starts from within. So drink plenty of water.
Strengthen and hydrate your skin
It is important to take good care of your skin before, during and after treatments. Hydrate your skin by taking an oil bath and apply a body butter daily to strengthen the skin barrier and keep your skin healthy, supple and hydrated.
Read the ingredients list
You would rather not put substances on your skin that you cannot eat. Choose products with natural ingredients that strengthen the skin's barrier function. Please note : Not all natural ingredients are effective. Consciously choose substances with a proven effect.
Avoid aggressive care products
Care products with a large dose of alcohol will dry out the skin even more. Also avoid other irritating, chemical ingredients. Always check the ingredients list of your care products carefully
after.
Avoid foaming soaps
Never wash your skin with regular soap. Foaming soaps contain SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulfate): a solvent that removes dirt as well as the natural skin oil and can thus damage the skin barrier. This often leads to dry and flaky skin. It is better to use a mild, natural soap, both morning and evening, and rinse with lukewarm water.
Avoid parabens and phthalates
Parabens extend the shelf life of a product, but can mimic the effects of natural estrogens and are said to play a major role in breast cancer. So it’s best to play it safe. Do you see terms like methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben on the ingredients list? Then it’s best to leave the product alone. Phthalates also have a hormone-disrupting effect and are best avoided.
