Waarom je huid ook tijdens de zomer baat heeft bij een zachte scrub

Why your skin also benefits from a gentle scrub during the summer

Summer means sun, sunscreen, sweat, swimming, and long days outdoors. Wonderful for our mood, but sometimes a bit more challenging for our skin.

Perhaps you notice your skin looks duller, shows impurities more quickly, or feels less even. That's not so strange. During the summer, sweat, sunscreen, sebum, and dead skin cells accumulate more quickly on the skin's surface. A gentle scrub can then be a great addition to your routine.

But be careful: scrubbing is not the same as scouring. Especially not during the summer.

What does a scrub actually do?

Our skin is constantly renewing itself. Old skin cells make way for new, healthy skin cells.

However, sometimes these dead skin cells remain on the skin's surface for longer. As a result, your skin may:

  • look duller
  • feel rougher
  • develop clogged pores more easily
  • appear less even

A mild scrub helps to remove these excess skin cells, leaving your skin feeling fresh and soft again.

Why exfoliating can be especially beneficial in the summer

During warm days, your skin often produces more sebum and sweat. Additionally, we apply sunscreen more frequently, swim in chlorinated or salt water, and spend more time outdoors. As a result, impurities can accumulate more easily.

Gentle exfoliation can help to:

  • remove accumulated dead skin cells
  • make the skin feel smoother
  • help prevent clogged pores
  • reveal your natural glow again

The result? Fresh, radiant skin that stays better balanced.

How often can you exfoliate?

More is not always better. Scrubbing too often can disrupt the skin barrier and actually cause irritation or sensitivity, especially if you have been in the sun a lot.

For most skin types, once or twice a week is sufficient. Do you have sensitive skin? Then once a week may already be more than enough.

Above all, listen to what your skin needs.

Not all scrubs are the same

Choose mild, not aggressive

Coarse grains or aggressive exfoliants can cause minor damage to the skin barrier. And that is precisely what we at Self want to avoid.

That is why we opt for finely ground rice grains that gently help remove dead skin cells without unnecessarily stressing the skin.

In addition, our Facial Scrub contains nourishing ingredients such as:

  • shea butter
  • coconut oil
  • macadamia oil
  • argan oil
  • aloe vera

This way, your skin won't feel dry or tight after scrubbing, but rather soft, nourished, and comfortable.
