You don't get dark circles just by having too many margheritas in the evening! It has to do with the delicate skin of the eye contour which is quite thin and becomes thinner with age, usually leaving you with even more visible dark circles.
What are dark circles?
There are several causes for dark or blue circles under the eyes, but they all have to do with the thickness of your skin. The skin around the eyes is thinner, making blood vessels visible more quickly. When your body does not get enough oxygen or fluid, the blood flows more slowly and becomes darker in color. Due to the thin, fragile and almost transparent skin, these blood vessels will shine and leave a brown or bluish effect.
In some families, dark circles are genetically determined. This means that the very thin skin around the eyes is hereditary.

Perpetrators to watch out for
- Our way of life is often responsible for the appearance of dark circles around the eyes: an all-nighter, too much wine or smoking causes too little oxygen to enter the blood.
- If you eat unhealthy, you will often be deficient in vitamins and minerals: if you lack vitamin C, iron or zinc, the first signs may be dark circles under your eyes.
- You don't drink enough water, which causes your body to become dehydrated from within.
- Do you suffer from hay fever and do you rub your eyes a lot? Frequent rubbing causes irritation to sensitive skin and can aggravate dark shadows under the eyes.
- Sitting in front of your computer for long hours puts a lot of strain on your eyes and can also be a cause of dark circles.
- Underlying psychological causes? Stress at work, dreading an exam, or anxiety can also be reasons for dark circles under your eyes.
Tips & tricks that make you shine
The skin under your eyes naturally thins as you age and there is no magic bullet that will instantly make your skin thicker. Still, these little tips can give your eyes a fresh look:
- Always drink enough water and make sure your skin stays hydrated day and night.
- Go for a healthy diet with less salt, caffeine and sugar. Give your body a boost with a shot of ginger in time and eat enough celery, asparagus and bananas.
- Sleep enough and try to reduce stress as much as possible (I know... not always easy!)
- Hydrate your skin daily with a night and eye cream and pamper your skin with ingredients that have a positive effect on the thin tissue under the eyes.
Ps. Did you know that the All-Night Starlight Night Cream is a night and eye cream in one? Apply once… benefit twice!

And last but not least ...
Stimulate blood circulation in your face (and under your eyes!) by massaging the skin daily with a rose quartz facial roller. The SELF Rose Quartz Facial Roller removes toxic substances from your skin, stimulates blood circulation and reduces swelling, resulting in beautiful, even skin.
Tip from our beauty advisor Batoul: apply a small amount of night cream under the eyelids and gently roll over your eye contours with the small stone of the facial roller . Always roll from the inside to the outside so that you optimally stimulate the skin and lift dirt from your face.
