Did you know that the sun is the main culprit of premature skin aging? That has everything to do with the radiation of the sun. About 95% of the rays that can reach your skin are UVA rays. UVA light is always there – even in cloudy weather – and effortlessly penetrates glass, clouds… and your skin. UVA radiation is so powerful that it can damage your DNA. The result? The functioning of your elastin and collagen fibers changes, causing your skin to sag and wrinkles to appear. UVA radiation can also promote hypersensitivity to sunlight and cause pigment spots to develop. And let's not forget the risk of skin cancer!
The remaining 5% UV rays are of the UVB type. UVB rays allow your skin to tan but are also responsible for burning. You may not think about it, but a tan is proof that your skin's natural defense mechanism has been activated. To protect itself against UV radiation, your body produces melanin, which turns your skin brown. Is your skin burned? Then her natural protection has failed. Every time you burn, your skin suffers irreversible damage.
Protecting yourself from the sun is not only something you do at a tropical holiday destination, but all year round!
Choose the right sun protection
Any form of sun damage affects your skin and increases your risk of skin cancer. It is therefore crucial to protect your skin against UVA and UVB rays. Please note: not every sun product also protects against UVA radiation. So pay close attention to the packaging!
Our brand new Boost of Protection with SPF 30 offers broad-spectrum protection. This means that it protects you against both UVA and UVB rays. An important plus! And oh yes, our newest SELF product is 100% vegan, of course!
Spread enough!
Protecting your skin against harmful UV rays every day is a must for healthy, radiant skin!
Apply sunscreen to your face and other body parts exposed to sunlight every morning. Use enough product! To protect your skin according to the protection factor on the packaging, you should apply 2 milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin. If you only use half, you are only 50% protected.
A handy reminder:
- Face: half a teaspoon
- Arms and legs: four tablespoons
- Stomach and back: two tablespoons
Bright sunlight, swimming or sunbathing? Then your skin needs more. Apply an extra layer of sunscreen every two hours to optimally protect your skin.
Hydrate your skin
The heat of the sun has a drying effect on the skin and depletes its natural supply of fatty acids. The result? A dry, flaky, wrinkled skin. So pay extra attention to hydration during the sunny months.
Our Boost of Protection is packed with natural antioxidants such as grapeseed oil that combat sun damage and premature skin aging and intensely hydrate your skin.
Tip: The soft, water-resistant sun milk is 100% safe for children, pregnant women, skin problems and chemotherapy. In short, the perfect ally for anyone who wants to keep their skin healthy.
Calm your skin
After exposure to the sun, your skin needs extra attention. Soothe your skin with an intensely nourishing cream. Due to its restorative effect, you can use the SELF body butter perfectly as an after-sun treatment. The rich cream melts onto the skin, leaving it radiant and silky soft. The 100% natural and vegan ingredients nourish your skin and contribute to optimal recovery and a balanced moisture balance. Together with our Boost of Protection, our Fine Delicate Body Butter is your perfect partner in crime against sun damage.
Find the shadow
Using a good sunscreen is one thing, but it is certainly not an excuse to spend hours baking and frying. This certainly also applies to the little ones among us. Burning just a few times during your youth drastically increases the risk of melanoma, i.e. skin cancer. And all for a tan. Young or old: seek shade as much as possible and definitely try to avoid the sun between 12 noon and 3 pm. Wear protective clothing and stay away from the sunbed. Did you know that the radiation from a tanning bed is up to six times stronger than the midday sun in the tropics? An absolute no-go.
Enjoy the sun (which is hiding for a while) but keep it safe!
love,
Team SELF
