Salicylic acid, great for your skin and acne
We’ve all experienced it at one time or another, dull skin with blemishes and blackheads getting in the way of that healthy glow we all long for. Today I am happy to introduce you to the miracle ingredient “salicylic acid,” the solution that makes skin give you back your glow! Curious?
Saclicylzuur, what?
Salicylic acid is derived from the bark of a willow tree and acts as an exfoliant for our skin. This means that it removes dead skin cells and makes our skin look radiant and beautiful. However, salicylic acid only works when there is a sufficiently high concentration in your product, by sufficiently high is meant between 0.5 and 2%. Does your product contain less than 0.5% salicylic acid? Then chances are that the desired effect will not be achieved.
What does SELF?
At SELF, we stand for honesty and transparency. We know that most brands put the bare minimum in a formula to minimize costs, but we believe there is more. If science shows that a result requires a minimum of 0.5%, you’ll always find more than that percentage in our products so we can guarantee the best possible result. Salicylic acid can be found in our facial lotion and facial scrub and this in sufficient quantity so that the substance also works well on the skin!
Tip: ingredients are listed in descending order of weight. This means that the lower salicylic acid is listed, the less of it is in your product. It does not mean that if there is salicylic acid in your product, that the product works. So always check the amount!
Salicylic acid is also great for people with oily or blemished skin. It penetrates the pores and dissolves accumulated sebum, which is the best way to get rid of barbed grains and blackheads. Because salicylic acid has the same structure as aspirin, it has anti-inflammatory properties and can also reduce acne. Moreover, it is well tolerated by all skin types and there is a much lower risk of irritation and sensitivity than when using glycolic acid.
Tip: Removing dead skin cells from your face does make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. This is because the top layer of skin becomes slightly thinner. So don’t forget to protect your skin properly from the sun and apply plenty of sunscreen. Your skin will thank you!
